Toast for a new term!

Basically, today’s the end of my Christmas Vacay. Here are the things I did for the past days…

At the start of my Christmas Vacay, I promised to make my term break as worthwhile as possible.

  • I was able to bond with my family
  • I was able to watch TV shows like Be Careful With My Heart, Showtime, and the like
  • I was able to download and watch movies like A Secret Affair (2012), Sisterakas (2012), Suddenly It’s Magic (2012), Pitch Perfect (2012), Cabin in the Woods (2012), and The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
  • I was able to watch movies in a movie house ALONE. I watched MMFF’s Best Picture, One More Try, and the internationally-acclaimed movie, Thy Womb.
  • I was able to create an online portfolio which contains my resume and some of my works. Hire me? Yes, hire me!

Before the start of this year, I made 13 rules that I need to follow this year. I should follow those rules.

Tomorrow, January 10, another term will start. A brand new term with more challenging, demanding, and stressful challenges yet a term filled with laughter, love and positivity. Here are my courses, for General Education Courses: I have KASPIL2 and MATAPRE; and for my majors: I have RADIPRO, CONCEPT, WRITING, and VPRODUC. I know this term is totally different from last term. So brace myself for this term! Dr. Sibayan for the second time around!!! Ohyeahhh!!! BELIEVE.

This time, I will be more positive/optimistic in life because I know positive things happen to positive people. #KeepCalmAndBelieveICan! #SoHelpMeGod! #KeepCalmAndGoForGold! #PusoTiwalaPaniniwala! #KeepTheFaith! #FocusBeGratefulBeHumble!

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. -Romans 12:12

"Kontraktwal" is a short film about contractualization.

Made this for our INTOECO (Introduction to Economics) Class under Ms. Krista Yu (Term 2, AY 2012-2013) with my awesome groupmates Issa Abello, Erica Atonito, Bea Bravo, Carl Corilla, Czarina Gueco, Geraldine Grones, Allan Ng and Jemie Umalie.

Here’s the simple poster I made for our short film:

Yes! 5 terms down, 4 more to go!!!

As what I’ve said, the next terms may be hard and stressful but I know it will be worth it in the end…

How did my 2nd Term as a Communication Arts major went?

  • Basically, I enjoyed this term mainly because the majors I took were more on active participation and application of what we have learned. The majors I took were FOTOCOM (Basic Photography), INSERCH (Introduction to Research for Production), and PUBLISH (Desktop Publishing). This term was not so stressful and demanding as last term but still, it was. I also took 3 General Education courses: INTOECO (Introduction to Economics) wherein we made a short film about Contractualization, GLOBDEV (Globalization and Development) wherein I made 6 Blogs, 1 movie critique, 1 Advocacy Video and so on, and lastly, the fun HUMAART (Art Appreciation). I was also the project head of TeamComm’s Team Building at Enchanted Kingdom.

What did I do to accomplish all the school works for this term?

  • Just like the past terms, by BELIEVING in myself more, by BELIEVING that Almighty God is always there for me…

So, today’s the official start of my Christmas Vacay!!! Yay for that!!! Here are the things I need to accomplish before the start of another challenging, demanding term:

  • Of course, bond with family!
  • Bond with best friends!
  • Enjoy Christmas Vacay!
  • Download and watch movies!

Cheers!

4 terms down, 5 more to go!!!

Ohyeahhh! The most stressful and demanding term yet is finally over!!!

How did my 1st Term as a Communication Arts major went?

  • As I said earlier, it was a stressful and a demanding term. I have three reasons why this term was a stressful and demanding one. First, it was my first time to take majors, four majors namely INTFILM (Introduction to Film), INTPRIN (Introduction to Print Media), MASSCOM (Mass Communication Theories) and INTBROD (Introduction to Broadcasting). As what was said by my INTPRIN Professor, we experienced “culture shock” because before we entered the program, we had “party all-day, all-night ” terms. Second, plus a pa-major course which I thought was an easy course, the WIKAKUL (Wika at Kultura) course. Spell HASSLE, W-I-K-A-K-U-L. The workload was just too much. But it was a fun course for I was with my close friends who were my group mates as well. I also took TREDTWO which was okay. Lastly, because I have three organizations for this year namely Team Communication (Professional Organization, FAST2011 (Batch Student Government of the College of Liberal Arts for ID 111), and Metro Alliance of Communication Students (MACS), I wasn’t to balance the three maybe because I prioritized my academic life.

What did I do to accomplish all the school works for this term?

  • I just did one thing, BELIEVE. I believed that I will make it. I believed that my God has plans for me, that there’s a reason to everything that’s happening to me. I think of positive thoughts. Whenever I accomplish a difficult work, I rewarded myself with anything that I know that I deserve. Just like after the most anticipated MASSCOM Post Midterm Exam (260 points), I bought two shirts that are really, really close to my heart, Team Manila’s Ambassador of Positive Vibes shirt and Ambassador of Fun shirt. Just BELIEVE and you’ll make it.

Here are some of the quotations that helped me to survive this stressful and demanding term:

  • And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. - Hebrews 12:1
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. - Philippians 4:13
  • For nothing is impossible with God. - Luke 1:37
  • Good things come to those who wait… Better things come to those who don’t give up… And the best things come to those who BELIEVE.
  • Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.
  • KEEP CALM AND BELIEVE YOU CAN
  • KEEP CALM AND GO FOR GOLD

Tomorrow’s the start of my Term Break! Yay! I have 12 days to relax, to unwind, to loosen up, to chill. Here are the things I should accomplish before September 12:

  • Spend time with family
  • Catch up with best friends
  • Upgrade Baby Mac OS to OS X Mountain Lion
  • Watch Local Film such as The Healing, Thelma, The Reunion and more.
  • Download the movies Pirate Radio and A Clockwork Orange plus other movies

BELIEVE.

Ohyeahhh!

Hello Tumblr Land! Long time, no post! Hihihi!

I already met all of my professors for this term! So far, so good… Hihihi!

These past few days I was really busy reading the articles for different courses like INTPRIN, WIKAKUL, and last but not the least, MASSCOM! I can really say that my I was so drained for the past days and will be drained more in the days, weeks to come! Oh God! We really can’t have it all! No matter how good a person is in managing his time, one can only choose two out of the three: sleep, education, and social life.

I know all of these hardships, trials, stress and all that, will be worth it in the end! I know… I believe it will be!

I know and strongly believe that I am on the right track… We are on the right track where we can be the persons we are dreaming of.

I am Harold Orozco. I am MOTIVATED. I am CONFIDENT. I am STRONG. I am DRIVEN. I am FOCUSED to my VISION. I am DISCIPLINED. I am a HIGH-FLYER. I am a BELIEVER

"I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me".

INTFILO: Spiritual Pedagogy Reflection Paper

Here’s one of the four reflection papers I submitted for my INTFILO (Introduction to Philosophy) Course. For this reflection paper, I got 4.0 for this paper! Yeah, bragging rights! Hihihi! So, here’s my paper!

******

A school prepares and trains its students to become highly competitive and thoroughly ready to face a bigger world. A school offers holistic education which simultaneously  works on the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of the students that seeks to have a balance among the four components. It is a complete and whole  package which forms the human being.

I am lucky to have the opportunity to graduate both Primary and Secondary Education in a private sectarian school, a school owned by a religious organization, which molded me to become the person who am I today. Since I graduated in a private sectarian school, it has different activities which helped the students to become closer with the Almighty through the Morning Prayers, Daily Reflections, First Friday Masses, and the yearly Recollection and Retreat. But what about the students who study in a public and private non-sectarian schools where there are no religious activities prepared for them… through the spiritual pedagogy, all of the students, whether a student is from a public or private school, will have the chance to have a personal relationship with the Almighty.

According to the paper, there are three important elements that a spiritual pedagogy must have. First is the promotion of authentic values. I remember back when I was in Grade School, our class, together with our class adviser, prepared a skit regarding the value of self-reliance which we presented during the morning ceremony. Prior to the day of our presentation, we talked and discussed what is the value about and how can we transmit the message of our value in a way that will catch their attention. This implies that through the creative skits prepared and presented by the students and the teacher allowed other students to visualize and envisage the value presented to them which they could apply for the rest of their lives. On the other hand, when I was in High School, consistently, a value for the month was presented by the Campus Ministry Coordinator during the first Monday of the month wherein he told the connection of the value for the month to the core values and teachings of our school and the indications that every administrator, teacher and student must do in order for us to follow the footsteps of the founder of our school. We also have a promise board wherein we, students, can write the simplest things we would like to do in order for us to live the value for the month. We were also told that even though the value of the month is already done, we should keep on doing what was told for the betterment of ourselves. Through these skits and values for the month, it greatly helped the students, as well as the administrators, teachers, and employees, to understand the values presented to them and I am really hoping that all schools will have these kinds of activities like the value presentation through the skits and the monthly value for the month, whether in a public or private school.

Second is the education of emotions. Ecstatic, delighted, pleased, exhausted, upset, and lost are some of the emotions that a person feels which depends on the intensity of their feelings. As what I stated earlier, the emotional aspect is a part of the holistic education which helps to maintain a balance among the four aspects. The emotional intelligence quotient of a student is important for the students for we, people, are emotional beings who feel different emotions every single day. It is as important as the intelligence quotient of a student for both are needed, as well as the two other aspects, to be successful in life. Just like in the case of a student with great intellect, who has the highest CGPA in his batch; but he does not know how to control his emotions and feelings, his intellect is somehow useless. There should be a balance between the two aspects. At some point, that student needs the help and comfort of other people who will help him grow as an individual

And lastly is the sense of social awareness and responsibility among the students. As what was stated in the paper, spiritual pedagogy helps the students to become socially aware with the things happening around them which will trigger the students’ responsibility in being the change they want to see.

These three things will be made possible by the teachers, professors and educators who mold the students to become the persons of tomorrow. They will be their second parents, their guide, and their mentor. Being a teacher, professor, or an educator is an exceptional profession for they manage to handle their students all at the same time; unlike  other professionals who can only attend one client at a time. According to my teacher, seeing their past student as a successful person is one of the greatest gifts their profession can give them. They teach minds; they touch hearts; and they transform lives…. with the help of the Almighty, they can make it happen.

TREDONE Church Involvement: Journey of Learning

One of the major requirements of TREDONE was to render 10 hours of service in your Parish/Church for you to pass this course. I rendered my service in a St. Pancratius Parish, the Parish where our Chapel belongs. Here are the things that I learned and realized throughout those 5 weeks of service!

*****

Church involvement is not new for me. Back when I was in 4th year high school, Church Involvement is a part of the Civic Welfare Training Program of our school. Prior to the day I started my Church Involvement, I went to our Parish to ask for their permission if I could render 10 hours of Church Involvement and luckily our Parish accepts students who will serve the Church. I was assigned to be a Clinic Volunteer for the first week. The Clinic Head briefed me on what should I do like what to write on the patients’ information sheet, on how would I get their weight, height, temperature, and the history of their condition and the like. The Clinic head informed me about the different activities and programs the clinic is giving their parishioners every week like every 3rd Sunday of the month there is a Dental Mission. When I went to the medicines’ storage area, there were very few medicines on the closet. The clinic head told me that the government is not consistent in providing medicines and medical supplies for their clinic. I think they should not solely base the supplies of the medicines on the government, but they, too, should also do their part and understand that their clinic is only one of the thousands of clinics our country have. Good thing, a person with a good heart donated medicines to the clinic that somehow gave life to the storage area. With the patients I handled, most of them were children who have colds and cough. This made me realize how health is important for us and the need of our countrymen the access to free and quality healthcare. For the second up to the fourth week, I was tasked to be in the Educational Assistance Program of the Parish that allowed me to share the knowledge and skills I have with the kids. The second week was special to me because I was assigned to teach an old woman that despite her age she wanted to learn the basics of mathematics, reading and writing. Before I started teaching her, she told me the back-story why she would like to study. The reason is that she, together with her business partner, had a growing business but, sadly, her business partner deceived her. She already knew how to count and how to read a letter but she’s having a hard time reading words. I taught her how to read the words but still, with the limited time, I was not able to teach her that much. I salute her for her desire to know the basics of school things despite of age. I agree with the cliché saying, “If there’s a will, there’s a way” which greatly depicts the pursuance of the old woman to learn. No barriers will be a hindrance if one strongly believes in the power and capabilities one has. On the next few weeks, just what I did in our home-based tutorial in our NSTP - CWTS, I taught the kids who are on the Primary and Secondary Education. When they attend the Educational Assistance Program, they are given P100 for Grade School students while P150 for the High School Students. The money given to them is, really, a big help for the student and their family but sadly some of them are not attending the Educational Assistance Program every Sunday. Most of them are having a hard time understanding Math. For example they saw a big number in the equation, they will immediately say “Ang hirap naman nito, Kuya.” On my part, as much as I want to give them easy problems and equations, I want them to realize that they really need to go through that part in order for them to learn, for them to realize that they should experience hardships in order for the to gain the success they are aiming for, which I hope they learned from me.

For our TREDONE (Humanity’s Search for Life) Course, we watched different films and documentaries that allowed us to think deeper and eventually get something out of those films. The Ultimate Gift was one of those. I never knew this film before. We were tasked to make a reflection paper for this. And here it is!
******
The Ultimate Gift, a movie based on a bestselling novel by Jim Stovall, tackles about the transformation of a happy-go-lucky and an egocentric person, Jason Stevens to a whole new person whom he did not imagine he would possibly be. With his grandfather’s death, Howard “Red” Stevens, marked the start of  the journey to find the mysterious and peculiar “ultimate gift”. He was guided by the family attorney, Mr. Hamilton, along with his secretary, Miss Hastings, with his expedition, an expedition that changed him and his views in life forever (“The ultimate gift,” ).
The personal transformation of Jason Stevens has been highlighted in the film through the different gifts he received. These were the gifts he received along his journey namely The Gift of Work, The Gift of Money, The Gift of Friends, The Gift of Learning, The Gift of Problems, The Gift of Family, The Gift of Laughter, The Gift of Dreams, The Gift of Giving, The Gift of Gratitude, The Gift of a Day, and The Gift of Love. The Gift of Work, tackles about the importance of committing and excellently doing a job. He was tasked to go to a ranch in Texas where his grandfather’s friend, Gus, lives. He was asked to wake up at five o’clock in the morning for breakfast but he did not follow Gus’ instructions and so he was given a different “wake-up call”. After having their breakfast, Gus immediately dropped Jason to a place where he should put up the fence posts. After a long time, Jason finished putting up the fence posts and he then realized the value of work, the value of following the boss’ commands and the value of making an effort and commitment to do a job which his grandfather wanted him to learn (The ultimate gift, 2007). The message of this gift to me, as a student, is that I should exert an effort and commit that I will do my best in everything that is given to me regardless of the course and how easy or hard is it for I know it will all be worth it in the end. The Gifts of Money and Friends are somewhat related to each other. As with the plan of his grandfather, his money and credit cards, his car, his apartment, all his belongings were confiscated. Since he don’t have money, he realized that he doesn’t have a friend, even a single one. Along with that, he was tasked to find a true friend who does not consider his wealth but his self, his true self. While he was in the park, he met a girl named Emily who became his friend. After a while, he discovered that his true friend is suffering from leukemia and her mother, Alexia, is experiencing financial instability. And so, he raised money in the streets such as doing illegal acts just to raise money and he also gave his paycheck to them (The ultimate gift, 2007). The message of the gift of money to me made  me realize that all the things I have now is not permanent, we’re uncertain if we will still have those things tomorrow, the next day or maybe next time. Just like what Jason did, we should our brothers and sisters who are in need like the victims of Typhoon Ondoy and Sendong. On the other hand, the gift of friends let me realized that I don’t need a million friends to be happy and to enjoy life what I need is a true friend who will accept me who I was, who I am and who will I be and who will teach me the real lessons of life. Those were some of the gifts Jason received along his journey.
“Any process you are going through will get tougher before it gets easier. That’s what make learning a gift. Even though pain is your teacher.” – Red Stevens (“The ultimate gift,” ). This quote depicts that whatever problems, trials, and hardships we are experiencing now, they will all be worth it in the end for we gained something from that situation and we will be able to use it in the next chapters of our lives. Experiencing pain makes us better, a stronger, tougher, brighter, and wiser individual. As with the journey of Jason Stevens, the ultimate gift he received was the total change within himself with the help and guidance of other people.
“You can teach someone what character is. You can tell them “Do this! Do that!” but at some point, the gifts need input, intuition, dreams. One needs to be the freedom to dream, then act on it. Even if you don’t have a dream of your own, you can give dreams to others-help them to fulfill their dreams!” – Red Stevens (“The ultimate gift,” ). This quote depicts that even though the person teaches his young what is right or not, he should let the young have the freedom to dream and let him explore what he wants. As with the film, Jason Stevens does not have a dream but he made a dream of his true friend, Emily, come true through the hospital project. In simple ways, we can also help other people to fulfill their dreams. Just like what we do in our NSTP-CWTS (National Service Training Program-Civil Welfare Training Service) through our home-based tutorial we are able to share the knowledge we acquired to them and somehow inspire them to fulfill their dreams.
At first it was hard and tough for him, working in a ranch, having no money to spend for all his luxuries in life and the like; but in the end, he became the person he never imagined he would be, a Jason Stevens with a heart. Just like him, we can still change for the better. Do something for we still have the time to make things right.
